DATA 201 - Thinking with Data | Survey Design and Development
Assignments 2
What do you hope to understand from this dataset?
I plan to compare the factors of immigrants and non-immigrants pursuing post-secondary education, specifically university education.
What is your goal for collecting this dataset?
To identify whether there's a significant difference or trend in factors between Canadian immigrants and Canadian-born citizens pursuing post-secondary education university).
Who are your target participants?
An even Canadian and non-immigrant ratio for university undergrads and grads would be ideal. Recently graduated students can also work; however, those still in university would be better candidates.
Provide a clear description of the chosen data sets, including all the attributes and the type of question.
Type of Question:
Multiple Choice Question ⭐
Text Entry Question 💓
Likert Scale Question/Statement🔶
Rank Order Question ⬛
Q1. Were you born in Canada? ⭐
The data collected from this question is qualitative, specifically Nominal data because it categorizes participants. With yes or no questions, you can quantify a ratio of the responses.
The attribute of being born in Canada is crucial because it's the determining factor between immigrants and non-immigrants. It will be relevant to the other responses and related to this question. Moreover, it is one of the most important topics we must cover.
Q2. How many years have you been living in Canada? E.g. 12 💓
The data collected from this question is quantifiable, specifically a Ratio. This data measure is a record of years and can be aggregated.
This attribute is important because the longer a person lives in Canada, the more altered their point of view and perspectives will be, and that's definitely a factor to consider with our goal.
Q3. How old are you? (E.g 19) 💓
This is quantifiable data, more specifically, a Ratio. It measures age or quantified life. This data can be aggregated; for example, one can find the mean age of the participants.
Age is significant because it gives us a sense of maturity and a look into circumstances and lifestyle. It's also an indicator of specific values and responsibilities. We can also group participants to see whether they share similar beliefs towards post-secondary university) based on age. Moreover, this question is also to understand the student demographic.
Q4. What is your parent's highest educational attainment? ⭐
This response is categorical. However, the responses follow a natural order. Therefore, the data is Ordinal. This question can also identify whether there's a trend amongst immigrant and non-immigrant parents' level of education.
This question will verify whether your parents' level of education is a factor for an immigrant or non-immigrant, which is relevant to the topic. By analyzing this dataset, we can see any contrasts and similarities between non-immigrants and immigrants.
Q5. Which economic class do you identify with? 🔶
This data set is derived from a multiple-choice question. It is Ordinal data, as the option follows some type of natural order, but the choices also categorize participants. The answers themselves will be taken as categorical, even if the choices are from an ordinal economic system.
Education and economic freedom usually coincide. It would be interesting to observe how money affects immigrants and non-immigrants attending university. This is relevant to our goal because money can be a factor, and this question proves/disproves it.
Q6. Do you have dependents? (this question involves a skip) ⭐
This dataset is Nominal data. The response is either "Yes" or "No". One can count numbers for each response to come up with a ratio.
Due to the varying age groups in the university, some students will have kids or take some role as guardians. Identifying whether a student has dependents will show whether family is a factor in going to university.
Q6.5 How many dependents do you have? (E.g. 3) 💓
This dataset is a quantity, more specifically, a measure of a person. Therefore, the data must be in whole numbers. Moreover, this type of data can be aggregated. This data set is a Ratio.
By identifying the number of dependents, we can see if there's a specific limit to the extent to which education outweighs finding full-time employment for either an immigrant or a non-immigrant.
Q7 Are you a part-time or full-time student? ⭐
This data set will have two responses, one nominally omitted. The data will group participants as either Part-time or Full-time. We can count the number of participants and quantify either response.
This data is relevant to identifying whether being a full-time or part-time student is a factor in attending university. This data will reflect whether most people's circumstances find being a part-time student more appealing than being a full-time student or vice versa. Are there differences between immigrants and non-immigrants?
Q8. Do you have siblings? (This question has skip logic) ⭐
This is a yes or no question. The dataset will consist of Nominal data that can be counted for further analysis.
The reasoning for this question is the same as for the dependents question. This will back up the argument about whether or not family is a factor in going to public secondary education. Keeping familial ties in mind will help us achieve our research goal.
Q8.5 How many siblings do you have? (E.g 2) 💓
This data set will consist of whole numbers with a measure of persons. This data is considered a Ratio and can be aggregated for analysis.
This question is crucial because it will show us whether there's a direct relationship between the level of responsibility and the number of siblings one has. Does your number of siblings affect whether you want to attend university? With this question, we focus on whether family is a factor.
Q8.75 What is your birth order? ⭐
Firstborns, middleborns, and lastborns follow a natural order, so the data would be Ordinal. Within one participant's family order applies; however, this data will be nominal for our research as it will categorize participants.
With this question, we can determine whether birth order is a factor in pursuing a university education. We will focus on questions like: Does being the eldest mean you have more responsibilities to uphold? Does it mean you set a good example for your siblings? Does birth order affect your career path? Does it differ for non-immigrants and immigrants?
Q9. I enjoy my courses 🔶
This Likert scale will help identify whether students picked courses out of necessity or out of their own volition. Data derived from a Likert scale would be ordinal. The far left option states the participant's strong disagreement with the statement, and the far right option shows their strong agreement. The middle section will reflect a neutral opinion about the statement.
This statement is essential to help identify whether the level of enjoyment is a factor in pursuing post-secondary education. Is an enjoyable learning experience a factor in pursuing post-secondary education (university)?
Q10. I am working towards my dream 🔶
This Likert scale will help identify whether students picked courses based on other motivators, such as family, for example, or out of their own choice to pursue a meaningful career path. Since the data is derived from a Likert scale, the dataset would be Ordinal. The far left option states the participant's strong disagreement with the statements, and the far right option shows their strong agreement. The middle section will reflect a neutral opinion about the statement.
This statement is similar to the previous one. It indicates whether pursuing one's dream is a factor in pursuing post-secondary education. We can also tie this response to the student's economic well-being, as economic freedom usually opens up more doors for students. Knowing whether students want to attend university out of their volition will help us achieve our goal.
Q11. Higher education will help me create a better future🔶
This form of data is a Likert scale. The response's order is meaningful; therefore, this dataset would be Ordinal. The far left option states the participant's strong disagreement with the statements, and the far right option shows their strong agreement. The middle section will reflect a neutral opinion about the statement.
This will help identify whether expectations of the future are a factor in pursuing a university. Moreover, this statement also focuses on a student's level of self-interest.
Q12. Rate the following values from most to least, with one being the most. ⬛
This dataset is ordinal data, and the way participants order these values is meaningful in our research. This data can be contrasted and compared to see a trend among participants who share similar attributes.
Family ⬜
Recognition ⬜
Self-fulfillment ⬜
Security ⬜
Education ⬜
By analyzing the order in which participants rate these values, we can compare and contrast them and form some segregation system for the responses. We can identify similarities between immigrants and non-immigrants.
Q13. Can you give us feedback on why you chose your major(s)? Do not specify which major(s) you are in. 💓
This is a response-based dataset; there is no fixed answ, andnd the participants are not limited by the amount of feedback they provide. The responses will be discrete and nominal, so each will be studied independently. Moreover, a warning is provided to help protect thparticipants''s personal information.
The participants' responses will help us identify their values. With this information, we can look for similarities and differences between immigrants and non-immigrants, which is the focus of our research. The feedback participants provide will help confirm or reject the previous attributes.
